The challenge
Built in 1883, this lovely but old Traverse City office space was cramped, dark, cordoned off, and the washroom was 150 ft. down a shared corridor. The structure, built exclusively from materials unavailable today (Markum brick, cast iron steel beams and enormous hand-hewn wood joists) wrestled with our determined tradespeople every step of the way.
The solution
Carefully working from above an active and quiet (jewelry) retail store, Bay Construction added plumbing, shored up structural elements, materially improved sound dampening and installed extensive custom cabinetry, realizing a quiet respite perched over Front Street. The owners escape here, meet with friends and manage their affairs. Every item has a place. Every element is carefully considered, right down to the 8/4 custom flame-cherry desk we crafted – destined to become a family heirloom.
